How Can You Start Modeling at a Young Age?

Starting young can be an advantage, but only when it’s handled correctly.

There’s a difference between being scouted early and being ready to work professionally. That distinction is important, especially for parents and younger talent trying to navigate the industry.

In larger markets like New York City and Los Angeles, most agencies sign models at 18 or older. However, scouting often begins earlier. It’s common for agencies to identify potential at 15 or 16 and then stay in touch until the model is ready to enter the market. Agencies like Zuri Models are good ones for children in New York.

Child and teen modeling agencies work with younger age groups, sometimes starting with infants and continuing through the teenage years. The focus is usually on commercial work, which includes advertising, catalog, and lifestyle campaigns. These environments tend to be more localized and require active involvement from parents or guardians.

Regardless of the market, readiness matters more than age. Also parent awareness is important as they always need to attend meetings and appointments for those under 18.

Younger models need to be able to follow direction, stay focused during shoots, and handle structured environments. Even at an early stage, professionalism plays a role. This is where development becomes especially useful.

Latitude Talent Studios provide development for new models.

It’s not about rushing into the industry. It’s about building the right foundation early. There is no perfect age to start modeling.

The better question is whether the individual is prepared to treat it seriously, follow direction, and stay consistent over time. When those pieces are in place, starting at a younger age can lead to stronger long-term opportunities.
